Christian Pulisic and Michy Batshuayi may not be first choice starters at the moment for Chelsea but they are knocking down doors to be there. With Batman’s winner against Ajax and Pulisic’s hattrick away at Burnley, Chelsea has real depth to their attack for the first time since Mourinho’s first period in charge where he had Robben, Duff, Cole and Gudjohnsen at his disposal.
Under Sarri last season, Chelsea were slow, boring and mostly…predictable. Since Lampard has taken over there has been slight changes of formations and personnel for every game which has increased competition in the squad. This unpredictability of formations and players has given Chelsea the edge on their rivals as they have to plan for multiple systems and personnel. For Example, last season, most opposing managers would double up on Hazard and therefore contain Chelsea. This season, Chelsea have four exceptional wingers who all have different abilities. Pulisic and Hudson-Odoi like to run at defenders and shoot on sight. Willian has been a revelation with his explosive speed and trickery from deeper positions and Pedro has the ability to create chances in congested areas. At Burnley away last Weekend, Pulisic’s willingness to run at Burnley resulted in a thumping Chelsea win.
Similarly, to the wingers, Chelsea forwards has been making an impact in games from the start or the subs bench. Last season Chelsea were reliant on Higuain and Giroud for goals, both of these strikers offered very little in terms of goals or mobility. With Tammy and Michy, Chelsea has pace, power and goals now. Tammy is second in the scoring charts in the hardest league in the world, and Michy has scored vital goals in big matches, such as Ajax away. Their movement and selfless work have given Chelsea the ability to press teams higher up the pitch and create chances from winning possession then attacking at speed. Pulisic’s first goal at Burnley was an example of this. From winning possession on the halfway line, Pulisic drove to the edge of the box and sent a low strike into the Burnley goal.
With such vital goals and performances, the combination of Michy and Christian is a partnership that we are likely to see more frequently over the coming months, especially with the number of games over the winter period. Chelsea has a good feel factor at the moment and it is only just beginning to gain momentum.
